Journal for Motivation!
To achieve your goals, you need to have strong motivation. If you're going to be successful at something you wanna do, you'll need to be motivated. It usually comes naturally simply because you're working toward something you want, but there will be times when you have to deal with rejections and defeats. At this point this is when the motivation disappears. You need to be able to rediscover your motivation, and tap into your motivation even when it seems like the most difficult task in the world. One way to do this is through journaling! Journaling is proven to improve motivation. Keep reading to learn more!
1. Write about what you want more than anything else
- What do you want? Is it your dream job? To travel the world? To have more money? To lose weight? To be a better person?
- Think about what is most important to you at this point in your life, and write it down.
2. Why do you want it
- The why matters. Why is what drives you to action. If you want something bad enough, and you are willing to work hard for it, there's usually a reason for that. It may be a logical reason or an emotional reason, it may be a reason derived from need or love or fear or something else, but it is definitely there.
- Figure out this reason. Why do you want this?
3. Visualize the benefits in words
- Paint yourself a vivid picture of how you will use this goal. Create your future in words. Write about it, and imagine (by writing in the present tense) how you feel as you experience that future.
- You can do this in a journal. Put yourself in the shoes of your future self, and write from their perspective. How do you feel about achieving this goal?
4. Make a list of 100 ways to achieve this goal
- Set a timer, and just start writing. Keep your mind centered on the goal you want to achieve, and your subconscious will automatically supply you with ways to achieve it. It may seem hard to come up with 100 things, but keep going. Don't stop writing until the timer stops, and by the end of it, you should have some good ideas!
5. Take at least one step, and journal about it as an achievement.
- You know what you want. You know what steps you need to take to get there. So just start. One step at a time, no matter how small. Every time you take a step, make a note of it in your journal under a heading that says "Achievement", because it is an achievement! You are one step closer to reaching your goal than you were yesterday.
I started journaling two years ago, and still use my journals almost every day. I feel like I was able to reach my goals much faster once I started journaling, because I was going over what I wanted from life almost every day, setting me on the right path for success. I've linked some prompts I like to use here to check out!

I really admired your post this week! I have always been someone that has a complicated relationship with journaling. The idea of a whole blank journal scares me and makes me feel pressure to fill it out and not allow myself to simply write. I really like that you outline the step by step process you use to help start the writing process and identify what you are doing in order to find that motivation. I find myself becoming so motivated for certain things in life but don't know how to explain it properly and then I am unable to execute it. Thank you for sharing your tips, I will apply them in my every day life.
ReplyDeleteThis week, I truly enjoyed reading your post. For me, keeping a journal has always been a contentious relationship. I get anxious when I think of having a completely blank diary because I feel obligated to fill it out and restrain myself from just writing. I truly like how you lay out the steps you take to assist you begin the writing process and explain what you are doing to get that drive. I often find myself being really driven for certain things in life, but since I don't know how to articulate it well, I am unable to carry it through. I appreciate you providing your advice, and I'll use it moving forward.
ReplyDeleteI really admire this post and after reading it, it makes me want to start journaling. I agree that motivation comes naturally when you want to achieve something and it can come easy. I think journaling as a way to motivate yourself to do something is pretty unique and I never thought about it until now. I think talking about why it matters in a journal is a great way to recognize what you are doing is important. We often forget why we do things and remembering it can lead to more motivation. After reading this post, I can see the benefits of how journaling can lead to motivation.
ReplyDeleteI was going through a rough spot a few years back and I discovered something in my closet. A little journal my friend had given me as a gift. I decided to start writing in it, and have since stopped, but it was a really interesting experience. It gave a sense of repetition, but also helped figure out where my thoughts were. I like your post since it really breaks down what it means to create a journal, expressing yourself and making sure you hold yourself to your words. Great post :).
ReplyDeleteHello Sophia!
ReplyDeleteWell first of all I loved your blog, personally journaling is the reason why I keep my motivation. I discovered journaling like 3 years ago and it has definitely changed everything for me. Being honest I started journaling because I liked the aesthetic however it became a regular activity, every morning and night I would write down ANYTHING and it made me feel accomplished. As you mentioned big or small accomplishments are important and we should be proud of them. This has helped me a lot when feeling not motivated, although I loved journaling when I first started I wasn't fully committed to it but I realized journaling was the one thing that was making me feel super accomplished so I began and haven't stopped. Loved your post!
Hey Sophia! Reading your post really resonates with what I am doing right now I currently just wrote down my goals of what I want in my life and I am currently working towards that. I wrote down all of the things you wrote down in your blog and I do see it as theraputic and a way of manfiesting what you want in your life.
ReplyDeleteHey Sophia, I really appreciated your post! I've been doing a lot of work on self improvement lately and one of the things I've started doing occasionally is journaling. My issue is that I am pretty inconsistent with it and sometimes I just feel like I don't know what to write in the first place. This post is great because it doesn't just explain the benefits of journaling, it also gives you great prompts to get started! I particularly like the idea of clarifying why you have your specific goal, and the idea of journaling about every successful step towards your goal seems like a good form of positive reinforcement. Having a clear definition of what you want in life is the first step in making positive life changes.
